About Us

Saxon John Brown – the Cambridge area’s leading loft conversion company

Saxon John Brown is the leading loft conversion company in the Cambridge area. With more than thirty years’ experience designing and building  loft conversions, home extensions and – to a lesser extent these days – new-build houses, we offer a comprehensive and dependable service.

A second generation family business, Saxon John Brown was formed from two local companies in 1992 – Saxon Construction Ltd and John Brown (Saffron Walden) Ltd – since then we have reached the top of the list of loft conversion companies in the area.

Today, we are still a traditional family concern, with our directors active in the day to day running of the business, including personally helping and advising customers. On the strength of this, we have built an enviable reputation as loft builders both within the local community and further afield.

Who’s who at Saxon John Brown

Martin Start trained as an accountant with a local Saffron Walden practice before moving to the Argos Group where he remained for three years.  He joined the family business in 1983. Married with two children, he has been a parish councillor and now spends much of his free time on golf administration. This follows his 17-year career as a Cambridgeshire County player and a period in the prestigious role of President of Cambridgeshire Golf Union.

Colin Brown trained as a carpenter and joiner in his father’s building business after leaving school.  He quickly added office experience and became site manager. When he and Martin formed Saxon John Brown Ltd in 1992, he continued in this role and takes enormous pride in maintaining the high standards impressed upon him in his early career.  Colin likes to relax playing golf and following his beloved Arsenal FC.

Susan Brown’s career began in a high street bank, where she remained until having her children. She has been associated with the business since its infancy, starting as a part-time accounts clerk. Now that her three children are at school and university she works full-time and has the role of company secretary. Her responsibilities include maintaining the company’s accounts.  When not at work she spends most of her free time horse riding.

Gillian Start was employed by GKN for 11 years, eventually becoming stock controller of one of their busy fastener divisions.  When her children were young she changed direction and worked some nights as a carer in a home for people with special needs.  She joined the business in 2001 when her children became more independent and now helps out in all administrative tasks on a part-time basis.  Gillian loves to keep fit and walks miles with her labradors.

Alan Baker joined the company on a full-time basis in 2008 following a two-year period in a freelance role.  As an architect, he adds a wealth of knowledge to the survey department. This he now heads up, allowing the company’s long-serving surveyor, Ian Palmer, to reduce his hours after working for the company for 32 years. Outside normal working hours Alan is a retained fire-fighter - a role he is proud to have held for 25 years.

Alan Wilson and Richard Harding have a combined experience of 30 years’ designing loft conversions for the Company.  Alan was previously employed designing and project managing modular buildings worldwide.  Richard,  previously a surveyor, also spent 15 years with Dunlop Slazenger working in design and quality control.  Together they provide an unequalled service to potential customers through the advice and technical knowledge they offer.
